Our expressions are formed by feelings, consciously or unconsciously, and tell a story of who we are now. We all have an emotional response to Inauguration Day 2009: it ends eight years of nightmare, and begins the first African American Presidency in the United States. On Inauguration Day Shanna Maurizi, Rose Callahan and myself photographed New Yorkers around the city, culminating in a euphoric celebration at White Box Gallery. As a collaboration between three photographers, the Inauguration Day Portrait Project intended to capture the cultural zeitgeist at an individual level.
In addition to shooting through out the day, we invited participants from 6:30 - 11pm to have their portrait taken at the gallery. There was also streaming Inauguration speech and coverage of the event, MC Larry Litt Politeral Satyrist keeping the energy high, live music by Apollo Heights and Spontaneous Underground, and a beautiful Russian burlesque dancer who created a special Inauguration Day piece to "We Won't Get Fooled Again!" by the Who.
